If you're into Starcraft or MOBAs, this might be right up your alley, but a MOBA-RTS mashup wasn't what I was looking for from a Relic WH40K game. Overall, DoW3 isn't a terrible game - it looks pretty if nothing else - and some players might enjoy this kind of thing. It's just twitchy, frantic scramble to activate a dozen different unit abilities in the mess that is combat.
There's just not much in the way of tactics the way we typically think of them in CoH or earlier DoW games. Activated abilities rule the day and positioning is completely unimportant. Pop caps are huge but resources are paltry. The whole game is designed to have you throwing squads into a constant meat-grinder. There's no suppression, no indirect fire, no garrisoning, no destructible terrain, no cover, no positioning, and no retreating. Your normal squads are effectively cannon fodder. Gone is any sort of tactics or unit preservation there are scant means to heal or reinforce your units, and everything revolves around Elites. Unfortunately, there's very little in DoW3 that resembles a Relic RTS. I bought DoW3 in part to support Relic (I'm one of the minority here who doesn't hate the developers) and in part because I love Warhammer 40K and love Relic RTS games.
